In this study, we focused on farmland and forest soils from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Yan Ting Station. We examined soil free-living nitrogen fixation (FLNF) rates and nitrogen-fixing microbial community responses across a series of soil moisture content (SWC) levels, ranging from 20% to 100% of field water holding capacity (WHC). The study particularly monitored changes in nitrogen-fixing bacterial communities in both soil types at both genetic (DNA) and transcriptional (RNA) levels.
