Workshop—How to write a plain summary of your research: Gain new perspectives and open up your research to a wider audience

In this session, we will explore ways to communicate (psychological) scientific results in a lay-friendly, but not oversimplified or lurid manner. Working with your own examples, I will guide you with evidence-based rules regarding linguistic and formal aspects. At the end of this workshop, you will be able to formulate your own plain language summary (PLS). Not only does the provision of such PLS open up your research to a larger audience - the PLS writing process can also give you a new perspective on your own work.

This session is appropriate for everyone who is interested in how to communicate their research to laypeople in an evidence-based way in the form of a non-scientific abstract (e.g., plain language summary).
In the workshop, you have the chance to work on a Plain Language Summary of your own research. Please bring an original scientific abstract of your research for some hands-on experience. Alternatively, you can also bring a scientific abstract of your choice for training purposes.

Writing plain language summaries for research articles, in the end, serves all scientific disciplines as it makes science more accessible and understandable. Writing such summaries also provides new perspectives for researchers themselves with regard to their own research (e.g., Why is it important? What is the key message? Why should it be totally transparent what was done?). Finally, PLS as a product opens up and makes research to a wider audience.and makes it more transparent and understandable for non-scientists. The workshop will be held in English.
