Medication use and health outcomes in people living with dementia and chronic comorbidities

Living with dementia adds complexity to managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Simplifying medication regimens or stopping preventive medicines is often recommended to reduce the potential for medicines-related harm. This research aimed to investigate medicine use and related health outcomes in people living with and without dementia, using real world data. The results show that people living with dementia may be overtreated for diabetes or undertreated for ischaemic stroke, potentially increasing their risk of harm, including preventable hospitalisations or death. This research will contribute to closing evidence-practice gaps for people living with dementia and chronic conditions.
