NRS-4954 | Daily diaries [Liverpool State Hospital and Home]

The purpose of these volumes is not certain. They may have been intended partly as a record of daily occurrences for inspection by official visitors to the institution. There is an obvious change in the form and content of the volumes from the first to the third, which is plainly the result of more systematic administration. The earliest volume 7/5350 includes admissions, discharges and deaths, quantities of food and other goods delivered, clothing issued to inmates and miscellaneous other activities. The second volume 7/5351 also records admissions and discharges etc., but other matters are dealt with more briefly and are generally the regular events which it is not appropriate to record elsewhere, eg. quality of food supplies, visits by doctor and clergymen, in other words the events about which an inspecting officer might wish to know set out in an accessible form.
