The Broad Institute is sequencing the Schizosaccharomyces pombe strain 972h- genome at low coverage using whole genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing. To test methods for assembly of very short reads, five microbial genomes were selected that had a finished reference sequence available. At least two libraries (short fragment and jumping) were generated and sequenced using Illumina. The Schizosaccharomyces pombe strain 972h- is one of these five microbial genomes.
