Drinking water distribution systems harbor a surprisingly diverse range of microbes despite water treatment. Metagenomic and metaproteomic analyses of sediment samples from drinking water distribution systems revealed a complex microbiome, including various non-bacterial taxa. Functional profiling indicates extensive biopolymer degradation potential, with non-bacterial proteins suggesting that protists, animals, and fungi play a key role in shaping these communities.
