During the field investigations in Xiangxi Autonomous Prefecture of Hunan Province, we found an interesting phenomenon. The same growers employ standard and persistent agronomic practices to grow the same variety of crop in two fields. After years of continuous cropping, one field developed continuous cropping obstacles (serious soil-borne diseases rates > 50%), while another field resisted these obstacles (soil-borne disease rates always < 5%). The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and differences between soils which controlled continuous cropping obstacles and those which faced continuous cropping obstacles (after 10 and 20 years of continuous cropping), including soil physicochemical properties and soil microbial diversity and community structure. This study will help elucidate the relationships among soil-crop-microbial ecology system and provide a theoretical basis for revealing the mechanism underlying continuous cropping obstacles and better cropping guidance.
