Rents of the hospital of "Santa Maria della Misericordia" in Udine (1398-1435)

The present dataset constitutes an Appendix to the book "Grano amaro. Lavoro contadino nell'Italia nord-orientale (secoli XIII-XV)", available in Open Access (URL). 

The dataset has been produced on the rent account registers of the hospital of Santa Maria della Misericordia in Udine, in particular those referring to the years 1398-1399, 1400-1401, 1406-1409, 1411-1414, 1415-1419, 1420-1423, 1424-1425, 1430-1431, 1432-1433, 1434-1435, preserved in the Archive of the Diocese of Udine (Archivio diocesano di Udine, Archivio del Capitolo di Udine, Archivio Ospedale S. Maria della Misericordia, bb. 342-347, 356, 358, 491).

The dataset has been organized in ten fields:

1) anno = the administrative year to which the data refer

2) luogo = the place where the farm/estate had its main seat

3) bene = type of estate (manso, mill, wood, etc.)

4) affittuario = name of the leasholder(s)

5-7) amount of wheat (frumento), oats (avena) and millet (miglio) the hospital requested each year according to the lease contracts. The amounts are expressed in pesinali (lt. 12.19)

8-10) percentage of solvency for each part of the lease.

Since synthetic account registers are only available for a handful of years (1410-1412; 1415-1418; 1422-1423; 1430-1431; 1432-1433; 1434-1435), the amount of rents the hospital requested has been reconstructed based on the analysis of surviving overviews (the rotoli), the date of new contracts and notarial documentation. The amount percentage of solvency (amount of rent paid divided by the amount requested) also includes arrears.
