Basal and field metabolic rates with body mass of Mammals

Dataset of basal metabolic rate (BMR, in ml O2/hour) with experimental animal body mass (in grams) for 580 mammalian species, and field metabolic rate (FMR, in KJ/day) with wild animal body mass (in grams) for 119 mammalian species. Data were extracted from the literature. BMR data were included in the dataset if they fulfilled the requirements of the protocol for measuring BMR (measurements are taken on adult non-reproductive individuals that are postabsorptive, resting but not sleeping, and with ambient temperature within the thermoneutral zone for the species). Data on FMR were included in the dataset if total daily energy expenditure was estimated using doubly labelled water methods and taken on wild adult individuals.
