Young adult smokers’ responses to photoageing intervention – Pilot Study

Fifty smokers, aged 18-30 years old were recruited in five community pharmacies in Perth, Western Australia. Twenty five were offered standard smoking cessation advice plus shown pictures of themselves photoaged as older smokers, twenty five were offered standard smoking cessation advice only. Nicotine dependence was measured using the Fagerstroum scale at monthly intervals in the subsequent three months.There was a marked trend for a decreasing nicotine dependence among those subjects who started with a greater dependence (Fagerstroum score 3+) in the photo aged group. However this was an exploratory pilot study (P =0.1).A full cluster randomised controlled trial is currently being conducted.
