Waterway regulation is beneficial to local socio-economic development, but its impact on fish and their habitats has also raised widespread social concerns. To gain an understanding of the distribution patterns and hydraulic traits of fishes’ habitats in Fuling-Fengdu river reach (parts of the fluctuating backwater zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir) and providing a scientific basis for protection and restoration of river habitats, the following steps were taken.
