Automated translations of the charter registers of Emperor Frederick III. (1440-1493), Regesta Imperii

Description

The Regesta Imperii (RI) project provides abstracts or regesta (Regesten) of all documented activities of the Roman-German kings and emperors from the Carolingians to Maximilian I (mid-8th to early 16th century) as well as of the popes from the Early to High Middle Ages. All abstracts/regesta are provided in the form of abstracts or regesta (Regesten) in printed volumes and through the RI Online database. Within this framework, research offices in Berlin (Berlin-Brandeburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, BBAW), Mainz (Academy of Sciences and Literature) and Vienna (Austrian Academy of Sciences) document the charters and letters of Emperor Frederick III (1440-1493).

This repository provides English translations of the short regesta (Kurz- or Kopfregesten) as published in the printed volumes of the Regesta of Emperor Frederik III (1140-1493). The translations were compiled at the Berlin research office and include translations of all short regesta (listed in the respective registers of charters) of the printed volumes. Since the RI's main purpose is to provide full regesta, the shorter abstracts available here are meant to help navigating the contents of the respective entries. The translated short regesta will be made available through the Regesta Imperii Online database and we hope that they will provide the same assistance to international users. 

The translations were created using the neural machine translation (NMT) software DeepL, enriched with a glossary of rare terminology available in a separate repository and manual post-editing. Currently translations are available for the volumes 1-36 of the Regesten Kaiser Friedrichs III (Vol. 1-19 are contained in the file "Gesamt1.xlsx", Vol. 20-36 in "Gesamt2.xlsx").

Remarks

As summaries of medieval legal interactions the Regesta of Emperor Frederick III contain rare vocabulary as well as Early New High German (ENHG) legal terminology. It was therefore not always possible to find exact semantic matches in English for specific German terms. In cases where no ideal matches could be found we chose to give the German terms in parantheses after the translated terms. We hope this helps to provide a more accurate picture of the contents.Original ENHG terminology was preserved whenever possible and is displayed in italics.
