US Army National Guard Cultural Resources Planning Level Survey - New York

In April 1998, St. Louis District personnel visited the New York Army National Guard (NYARNG) Headquarters in Latham, New York, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation in Waterford, New York, to research archaeological and historic buildings survey work conducted on federally owned or federally supported Army National Guard facilities in the state. This document reports the history of cultural resources investigations on NYARNG facilities, lists archaeological sites and historic buildings recorded within facility boundaries, discusses historic contexts and predictive models, and provides a list of Native American tribes that may be culturally affiliated with archaeological collections recovered from NYARNG facilities. To date, cultural resources investigations have been conducted at two NYARNG facilities, Camp Smith Training Site and Guilderland Training Area. On Camp Smith twenty archaeological sites have been identified and 52 buildings meet the age criteria for the National Register of Historic Places. One building, the Bear Bridge Toll House, is listed on the National Register, and another, the Water Treatment Plant (building 69), has been nominated. There is no further information regarding the evaluative status of the remaining buildings on Camp Smith. Cultural resources investigations at Guilderland Training Area revealed that the facility contains no archaeological sites or historic properties. St. Louis District personnel found no documentation regarding cultural work on the remaining NYARNG facilities, and no known sites or historic buildings have been recorded.
