WMS (Web Map Service) Registration of Temporary Mercury Storage Facilities

The WMS Service (Web Map Service) called “Register of Temporary Mercury Storage Facilities” allows the visualisation and consultation of the data set that represent the cartography included in this service contains the location of the existing mercury waste storage facilities in Spain. Regulation (EU) 2017/852 on mercury, which, among many other obligations, states that Member States should report information on sites where mercury waste is accumulated in excess of 50 metric tonnes (Article 21). In Spain, this mercury comes from the dismantling of chlorose industries. Currently in Spain there are only temporary storage facilities for mercury, but it is possible that in the future we will have a permanent storage facility. These data have been obtained from two sources: 1.-Clorine-sosa industries that are in the process of dismantling. 2.- Las Minas de Almadén and Arrayanes S.A. (MAYASA), which currently operates as a mercury storage facility. Temporary storage of mercury will be very limited in the near future as, after the closure of mercury technology in the choro-sosa sector in 2017, there are no longer large sources of mercury in Spain. The data collected are updated as of December 31, 2019. Currently, the information report is done through the EIONET network. The data reported to date is available on the EIONET portal (https://cdr.eionet.europa.eu/es/eu/mercury/) a tool provided by the European Commission and is publicly accessible and free of charge.
