Government; expenditure on education and study grants from 1900 onwards

This table gives an overview of government expenditure on regular education in the Netherlands from 1900 onwards. The figures presented have been calculated according to the OECD’s standardised definitions. Government expenditure consists of the expenditures of the national government, provinces and municipalities on educational institutions and education. The government finances the educational institutions and pays for research that they have carried out by universities. The government grants study funding, allowance for school costs, a reimbursement for educational facilities for young disabled people and childcare allowance to households (students and/or parents) and grants to companies and non-profit institutions. Total public expenditure is split between expenditure on educational institutions and education, and public expenditure on student allowances for households. Where applicable, these subjects shall be further broken down by the sectors of pre-primary and primary education, special (primary) education, secondary education, secondary vocational education and adult education, higher vocational education and scientific education. The data is available from 1900. The data for the period 1940 to 1945, at the time of World War II, are rough estimates as there are no sources for those years. The table also contains the indicator Public expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP). This indicator is used to compare public spending on education internationally. The indicator is compiled on the basis of provisions and definitions of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). The indicator is also shown in the StatLine Table Education; spending on education and CBS/OECD indicators. During the period 1914 to 1920, at the time of the First World War, and 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, public expenditure as a percentage of GDP is not available. For these periods, reliable data on GDP are lacking. Statistics on education expenditure are compiled on a cash-based basis. This means that educational expenditure and receipts are allocated to the year in which they are actually spent or received. However, the activity or transaction associated with the issue or receipt may take place in another year. In June 2018, CBS published the revised National Accounts for the period 1995 to the present. For example, GDP and total public expenditure have been revised upwards by the revision. The revision shall not be reimbursed for the years before 1995. As a result of the revision, the indicator ‘Total government expenditure as % of GDP’ shows a break between 1994 and 1995. Data available from: 1900 Status of the figures The figures from 1900 to 2020 are final. The 2021 figures are further provisional, the 2022 figures provisional. Amendments as of 7 December 2023: The further provisional figures for 2021 and the provisional figures for 2022 have been added. When will there be new figures? The final figures for 2021 will be published in the first quarter of 2024. The final figures for 2022 and provisional figures for 2023 will be published in December 2024.
