Kulliyyây-i-Sa’dî. This manuscript is now IO Islamic 1118 in the India Office collections. [metadata: Hermann Ethé, Catalogue of Persian Manuscripts in the Library of the India Office, 2 vols. (Oxford: India Office, 1903): volume 1, number 287 here with notations and hyperlinks]. 1118 Another copy of the same. This copy of Sa’dî’s Kulliyyât, the next in age to the preceding one, contains: 1.The preface of ‘Alî bin Aḥmad bin Abûbakr Bîsutûn (or even bin Bîsutûn, see Rieu ii. p. 596b, and G. Flügel i. pp. 529 and 530), who collected and arranged Sa’dî’s works between A.H. 726 and 734 (A.D. 1326-1334), comp. Bacher, Sa’dî-Studien, pp. 82 and 83, and Rosen’s remarks about it, Persian MSS., p. 175 sq. It begins, on fol. 1b: شكر و سپاس معبودى را جلّت قدرته الخ, and has been translated into English by J.H. Harington, in his Introduction to the Calcutta edition of the Kulliyyât, pp. 24-26. 2.Eight risâlas, the first of which is wrongly styled here در مجلس پنجگانه (a title belonging properly to the second), and is simply identical with the usual first risâlah در تقرير ديباچه (comp. the following copies, and see Bacher, loc. cit., p. 84), beginning, on fol. 3b: سپاس بی غايت و ستايش بى نهايت الخ ; the second (in five مجلس, on ff. 6b, 8b, 11b, 13a, and 15b) contains, as in the preceding copy, the five homilies, and begins with the introductory ḳaṣidah (which is left out there): الحمد لله الذى خلق الوجود من العدم الخ ; the third is the usual one, رسالۀ صاحب ديوان or در سؤال صاحب ديوان, beginning, on fol. 21b: خواجۀ زمان نيكو سيرت الخ; it has been translated into English by Harington, Introduction, pp. 14-17, and into German by Graf, Lustgarten, ii. pp. 136-142; the fourth (also the usual one), در عقل و عشق, begins, on fol. 23b: سالك راه خدا پادشۀ ملك الخ ; the fifth (likewise the usual one), در نصيحة الملوك, begins , on fol. 25b: الحمد لله الكافى حسب الخلائق وحده الخ ; the text has been edited by Latouche (Zenker ii. 484); and by Barb (Vienna, 1856); the sixth, on fol. 32b, is styled here رسالۀ ملاقات اباقا , is identical with the first story of the usual sixth risâlah, Sa’di’s interview with Sulṭân Abâḳâ, and begins: شيخ سعدى رحمة الله عليه فرمود الخ ; it has been translated into English by Harington, Introduction, pp. 17-19, and into German by Graf, Lustgarten, ii. pp. 142-146; the seventh, on fol. 33b, is styled رساله در نصيحت و رغبت پروری (in the colophon simply نصائح), is identical with the second story (in some copies the third story) of the usual sixth risâlah, the نصيحت انكيانو or رسالۀ انكيانو, Sa’di’s advice to Aukiyânû, the Moghul governor of Fârs, A.H. 667-670 (A.D. 1268-1272), and begins: معلوم شد كه خسرو عادل دام دولته الخ ; the eighth, on fol. 35b, is styled رساله در فوائد سفر , is identical with the حكايت ملك شمس الدين تازيگو, or Sa’di’s anecdote relating to Malik Shams-aldîn, the chief revenue-collector or lord-lieutenant of Fârs since A.H. 676 (A.D. 1277), and begins: در زمان حكومت ملك عادل مرحوم شمس الدين الخ ; it has been translated into English by Harington, Introduction, pp. 19-21, and into German by Graf, Lustgarten, ii. pp. 146-148. 3.Gulistân, on fol.36b. 4.Bûstân (here styled again سعدى نامه), on fol. 107b. 5.Arabic ḳaṣîdas, on fol. 207b. 6.Persian ḳaṣîdas, on fol.214b, preceded by a فهرست, on fol. 213b; beginning as in the preceding copy. 7.Marâthî, on fol. 242b, preceded by a فهرست, on fol. 242a; they begin here: دل شكسته كه مرهم نهد دگر بارش الخ (Calcutta ed., fol. ٢٤٥). 8.Mulamma’ât, on fol. 247b, preceded by a فهرست on fol. 247a; they begin: تو خون خلق بريزى و روى در تابى الخ. 9.Tarjî’ât, on fol. 249b, beginning: اى زلف تو الخ (see the preceding copy, fol. 349a). 10.Ṭayyibât, on fol. 262b, preceded by a فهرست, on fol. 256b; they begin: اوّل دفتر بنام ايزد دانا الخ (Calcutta ed., fol. ٣٦٤). 11.Badâ’i’, on fol. 366b, preceded by a فهرست , on fol. 363b; beginning as in the preceding copy. 12.Khawâtîm, on fol. 412b, preceded by a فهرست, on fol. 410b; they begin: سپاس و حمد بي پایان خدارا الخ (Calcutta ed., fol. ۴١٥). 13.Ghazaliyyât-i-ḳadîm (غزليّات قديم), or early ghazals (wanting in the preceding copy), on fol. 430b, preceded by a فهرست, on fol. 429b; they begin : اى يار ناگزير كه دل در هواى تست الخ (Calcutta ed., fol. ۴٣٠). 14.Ṣâḥibiyyah (صاحبيّه), or epigrammatic poems (wanting in the preceding copy), on fol. 437b, beginning with the prose-introduction:الحمد لله على نعمه الخ (Calcutta ed., fol. ۴٣٨). Initial bait of the first poem: نگين ختم رسالت محمّد عربى شفيع روز قيامت محمّد مختار In other copies this poem is found among the Muḳaṭṭa’ât, see, for instance, No. 1121 in this Cat., fol. 345a, first line. These poems have been edited and translated into German by Bacher in ‘Sa’di’s Aphorismen und Sinngedichte,’Strassburg, 1879. 15.Khabîthât (خبيثات), or obscene poems, identical with the Muṭâyabât of the preceding copy (as they are styled here too at the end of the part), and beginning with the same lines in prose, on fol. 462b. Initial bait of the first poem: عارفى چشم دل بروى داشت الخ (corresponding to the seventh poem in the preceding copy, fol. 363b, and the initial poem in Nos. 681 and 747 of the Bodleian Cat.) 16.Hazliyyât (هزليّات), i.e. the mock homilies, called in the preceding copy مجلس هزل, in three مجلس, on ff. 472b, 476b, and 478b. Beginning of the first: اللّعين الشيطان الخ (Calcutta ed., ff. ۴٧٥-۴٨٠). 17.Muḍḥikât (مضحكات), or comic pieces in prose, on fol. 480b, beginning: شخصى از فقيهى سؤال كرد الخ ( Calcutta ed., fol. ۴٨١). 18.Rubâ’iyyât, on fol. 482b, beginning: هر ساعتم اندرون بجوشد خون را الخ. 19.Fardiyyât (فرديّات), or Mufradât, on fol. 494b, beginning: وربّ غلام صائم بطنه خلا الخ (corresponding to fol. 374a, l. 7, in the preceding copy). This copy, in which the Muḳaṭṭa’ât are wanting, is dated end of Muḥarram, A.H. 819 (A.D. 1416, March 30). By Fîrûzbakht bin Iṣfahânshâh. No. 287, ff. 499, 2 coll., each ll. 21; small Nasta’lîḳ; a small illuminated heading at the beginning of each part; larger illuminations on ff. 23a, 214a, 242a, 247a, and 499b; size, 7¾ in. by 4½ in.
