The small mammals of Nyungwe National Park, a tropical montane rainforest in Rwanda, East Africa

Here, we present data on small mammal communities in Nyungwe National Park (NNP), Rwanda. We conducted a survey of non-volant small mammals in NNP in 2022-2023 as part of a PhD research. We have also presented a checklist of the non-volant small mammals of Nyungwe, which incorporates current records; an annotated checklist of small mammals of NNP (https://doi.org/10.4081/tz.2025.222); and a taxonomic key to 23 rodent species of NNP (https://doi.org/10.30564/re.v7i4.10304). This dataset also provides a list of scientific references documenting the mammals of Nyungwe dating back to the 1960s. Even though we have studied non-volant small mammals, shrews are still underrepresented in current records compared with the annotated checklist. Besides, given the importance of diverse groups that still show cryptic species, especially in Afrotropical regions, bats will also be targeted in future surveys. This is a continuous assessment in which future results from additional surveys will be incorporated into subsequent versions.
