Our study is a high-throughput sequencing approach of sediment samples from continental pans in the Kalahari Desert. Geochemical parameters and lipid biomarker analyses have been determined. Additionally, we applied qPCR and Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing in order to examine the response of indigenous microbial communities with respect to modern and past climate induced environmental conditions.
