DISDEM-ECOPOL Spain Protest Dataset, 2000-2020

This dataset (N=4,623) contains data on protest events in Spain between 2000-2020, extracted from press reports published in the best-selling national general information newspapers: El País and El Mundo. The news search was carried out by reviewing the printed version of the issues, page by page. Protest events from 2000 to 2017 were coded by a team of four people trained in the framework of the project “Disobedient Democracy: A Comparative Analysis of Contentious Politics in European Semi-periphery” (DISDEM) led by Danijela Dolenec. Protest events from 2018 to 2020 were coded by a member of that team following the same instructions in the framework of the project “The Evolution of Spanish Contention: A Longitudinal Analysis of Social Movements and Protest, 2000-2020” (ECOPOL) led by Eduardo Romanos.
