Castle of Los Vélez inscription (Mula, Murcia)

Mula castle was built on the 16th century remains of a medieval Islamic castle. The castle is the work of Pedro Fajardo y Chacón, I Marqués de Los Vélez, who showed his power to the town of Mula by building it. However, in order to build it, it was necessary to deceive the king, since at that time Spanish nobles were prohibited from building new fortresses. This inscription, written in Latin, affirms that the Marques de Los Vélez rebuilt a previous fortress from Roman times that had been built by the Roman emperor Antonino Augusto Pio. Archeology has shown this is completely false, as there are no Roman remains here. The full text of the inscription is as follows: Marchio Petrus Fagiardus Primus hanc turrin erexit, marcentenque arcem olim ab Antinino Augusto Pio structam reaedificavit, inmperante Carolo Caesare IIIII.
