Climate change report 2017

In 2015, around 78.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent were emitted in Austria. Emissions were thus around 0.1 % higher than in 1990. Compared to the previous year 2014, GHG emissions increased by 3.2 %. The main responsibility is the increase in emissions in the areas of energy supply, transport and buildings. The non-European emissions trading sectors emitted 49.3 million tonnes in 2015. GHG emissions were thus 2.2 million tonnes below the national emission ceiling for 2015. According to scenario analyses by the Federal Environment Agency, the national GHG reduction target by 2020 can be achieved through additional measures, especially in transport and indoor heating. Consistent long-term efforts are essential for achieving the 2030 and 2050 targets.
