To identify novel candidate genes required for sensory perception in the Johnston's organ (JO) of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster we dissected 300 second antennal segments of 4 different genotypes. Sound perception is known to be performed by the subpopulation of AB Neurons in the JO, whereas gravity/wind perception is presumably processed by the CE Neurons. We therefore sequenced the transcriptomes of the second antennal segment of wild type control flies and after ablating either all Neurons of the JO, only AB Neurons, or only CE Neurons using the Gal4-UAS expression system in combination with the FLP/FRT system.
