Correlations of typical sections on a global stratigraphic scale

The Pliocene, positioned by Ambroggi between the Oligocene and the Quaternary, is divided into a lower Pliocene (Plaisancian-Astian) and an upper Pliocene (Calabrian-Villafranchian). This Pliocene is correlated with that of our type section, also distinguishing a lower and upper Pliocene.
