The hyperthermophilic crenarchaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus P1 is closely related to Sulfolobus solfataricus P2. The same phylogenetic details apply. Both were isolated from hot springs in the Naples area, Italy. Both strains have been employed for extensive molecular and microbiological studies on archaea. Moreover, both strains have been used as laboratory hosts for a wide range of diverse crenarchaeal viruses, and a unique family of archaeal conjugative plasmids.
