MANAGEMENT OF FISHERIES RESOURCES IN THE AREA OF CCAMLR

The oceanographic and fisheries information from surveys and the results of the
monitoring of predator stomach contents will be analyzed, as well as the data
available in the CCAMLR database of the currently exploited species: krill
(Euphausia superba), mackerel icefish (Champsocephalus gunnari) and toothfish
(Dissostichus spp.). The internationally applied management methods for
toothfish will be compared with national regulations.

We will develop the methodologies to obtain estimators of population and
biological characteristics of the species and the management procedures to be
implemented. Advice will be given to the national fishing industry in the
CCAMLR area.

The surveys will take place in the area of South Georgia Islands to the end of
summer - autumn in three successive years to allow inter-annual comparison by
means of local indices of abundance, size distributions (including ages
whenever possible). We will test hypothesis relevant to the ecological
mechanisms regulating the populations of the species of interest in the area.

Faunistic and ecological plankton and benthos information will be obtained
simultaneously as well as material to be used in the isolation and
identification of organic compounds of possible industrial interest.

Administracion de los Recursos Pesqueros en el ??rea de la Convencion para
la Conservacion de los Recursos Vivos Marinos Antarticos (CCRVMA)
Se analizar?? la informacion proveniente de cruceros de investigacion
pesquera, oceanogr??ficos y de monitoreo de contenidos estomacales de
predadores, adem??s de los datos disponibles en la base de datos de la CCRVMA,
de las especies actualmente explotadas: krill (Euphausia superba), pez de hielo
(Champsocephalus gunnari) y merluza negra (Dissostichus spp.). Para la merluza
negra se comparar??n los m??todos de gesti??n aplicados internacionalmente con
las normas nacionales.

Se desarrollaran metodolog??as para obtener estimadores de caracter??sticas
poblacionales y biol??gicas de las especies de y los procedimientos de
administraci??n para su aplicaci??n. Se brindar?? asesoramiento a la industria
pesquera nacional en el ??rea de la CCRVMA.

Los cruceros se desarrollar??n en la zona de las Islas Georgias del Sur hacia
fines de verano - principios de oto??o en tres a??os sucesivos a fin de
permitir la comparaci??n interanual mediante ??ndices locales de abundancia,
distribuciones de tallas (y edades cuando ??sto sea posible). Se pondr??n a
prueba hip??tesis respecto de los mecanismos ecol??gicos que regulan las
poblaciones de las especies de inter??s en el ??rea.

Simult??neamente se obtendr?? informaci??n faun??stica y ecol??gica de plancton
y bentos as?? como material para la separaci??n e identificaci??n de compuestos
org??nicos de posible inter??s industrial.
