SRI-Penn Manufacturing Industry Dataset, 1958-1976

<p>This data collection, intended to facilitate analysis of U.S. manufacturing industries, is an economic time series for 450 manufacturing industries for the time period 1958-1976. The dataset was developed for the Bureau of the Census by a joint team from SRI International and the University of Pennsylvania. Its purpose is to aid in estimating industry production functions and then in comparing theoretical measures of capacity utilization derived from those production functions with "actual" (survey based) measures of capacity utilization. The SP database was developed from a variety of sources, including published Census data, published and unpublished data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), unpublished data form the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and original calculations. The data include: shipments measured in current dollars and a shipments deflator; value-added in current dollars; total capital expediture; gross capital stocks; investment shares; labor information including all workers, payroll, and hours worked; cost of energy and fuel; all other material inputs in current dollars; and cost of net materials deflator (cost of materials minus cost of energy).</p>
