Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing of supplier-origin murine gut microbiome

The community composition of the laboratory mouse gut microbiome varies based on the supplier and influences disease susceptibility, behavior, and body morphology. Previously, the differences in supplier-origin gut microbiomes have been assessed with targeted amplicon (i.e., 16S rRNA) sequencing yielding limited taxonomic resolution and no information regarding the functionality of the supplier-origin gut microbiome. Here we apply metagenomic and metatranscritomic sequencing to the gut microbiome of the laboratory mouse of differing supplier-origin microbiomes to assess the functional capacity and transcriptional activity.
