The Geographical Names Board of New South Wales (Board) is the state government authority for place naming, as defined by Section 5 of the Geographical Names Act 1966. It falls under the purview of the Office of the Surveyor-General, which in turn is a part of the Department of Customer Service. The Board consists of nine members (as defined by the Act, Section3) and counsellors (as defined by the Act, Section 6). The Board meets 5 times per year to discuss place name issues, assign place names and make decisions on place name proposals.
