Coordinated X-ray and Radio observations of the drifting pulsar PSR B0943+10

PSR B0943+10 is the best studied radio pulsar exhibiting intriguing driftingsubpulses and the only one to have been detected in the Xrays and is thus theprime target for studying the relationship between the radio and Xray emission.We propose observations which will definitely allow us to determine whether theXray spectrum is thermal or nonthermal and thus distinguish between vacuumgaplike and other pulsar emission models. The drifting subpulses in PSR B0943+10exhibit two modes, one where the drifting is clear and the pulses are strong(Bmode) and one where they are not (Qmode). Coordinating these XMMNewtonobservations with simultaneous radio observations will allow us to select Xraysassociated with the two modes and thus determine whether their spectra differ. truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
