Rhodanobacter species are key organisms in contaminated groundwater environments at the Oak Ridge Integrated Field Research Challenge site in Oak Ridge, TN. Depending on the well, the groundwater being studied tends to be low pH (~3-7) and highly contaminated with nitrate, uranium, heavy metals, organic solvents and other contaminants. Rhodanobacter strains tend to dominate in many of these environments. As such, individual strains have been isolated from select wells for study of their physiology, genetics,their role in microbial stress response in these environments, and their bioremediation potential.
