The Public Works Department (VA 669) had wide-ranging responsibilities for all public works and buildings, including construction, maintenance and fitting out of these buildings. Other major responsibilities included roads and bridges, ports and harbours, local government and water supply. From 1877, the Department was also responsible for the administration of the Local Government Act.This series contains the texts of outwards telegrams to Inspectors and Clerks of Works, contractors and other officials with respect to the execution of works, the supply of equipment and materials and other matters within its area of responsibility.Details include the addressee of the telegram, a full text and the reference number of any inwards correspondence to which the telegram was a response.The series ended in 1895 when telegrams were to be copied into the Outwards Letter Books and indexed.
