?Fromweek40/2015,thestartofweeklyreportingoninfluenzaactivityintheWHOEuropeanRegion,toweek53/2015,4579influenzadetectionsacrosstheRegionhavebeenreported.InfluenzatypeAvirusesareprevailingovertypeB,but,unlikethesituationinthe2014¬–15season,A(H1N1)pdm09virusesareprevailingoverA(H3N2),andtheproportionofB/Victoria-lineagedetectionshasrisensubstantiallytorepresent~62%ofthetypeBdetections.Todate,sevenEU/EEAcountrieshaveshared94influenza-positivespecimenswiththeFrancisCrickInstitute,London,fordetailedcharacterisation.Thisincludesthreeadditionalcountriesand47additionalspecimenssincetheNovember2015report.Sincethelatterreport,29viruseshavebeencharacterisedantigenically,andgeneticanalysesareongoing.The23A(H1N1)pdm09virusescharacterisedantigenicallyweresimilartothevaccinevirusA/California/07/2009.Worldwideanewgeneticsubclusterofviruseswithinthe6Bsubgrouphasemerged,definedbyHA1aminoacidsubstitutionsS162NandI216T,and50%ofthetestvirusescharacterisedinthisreportfallinthissubcluster.ThethreeA(H3N2)testvirusescharacterisedbyhaemagglutinationinhibition(HI)assaywerepoorlyrecognised(titresatleastthirty-twofoldreducedcomparedtothehomologoustitre)byreferenceantiserumraisedagainstegg-propagatedA/Switzerland/9715293/2013,thevaccinevirusrecommendedforuseinthe2015–2016northernhemisphereinfluenzaseason.Thetestviruseswererecognisedsomewhatbetterbyantiseraraisedagainstegg-propagatedA/HongKong/4801/2014,thevirusrecommendedforuseinsouthernhemisphere2016influenzavaccines.TheB/Victoria-lineageviruswasantigenicallysimilartoB/Brisbane/60/2008andfellingeneticclade1A,asdorecentlycollectedvirusesworldwide.ThetwoB/Yamagatavirusescharacterisedfellingeneticclade3andreactedwellwithpost-infectionferretantiserumraisedagainstegg-propagatedB/Phuket/3073/2013,therecommendedvaccinevirusforthenorthernhemisphere2015–16influenzaseason.
