Myxosarcina sp. strain GI1 is a member of type II cyanobacteria. Sequencing of GI1 genome will expand our knowledge on the phylogeny of type II cyanobacteria because a Myxosarcina genome is not available yet. In addition, GI1 is of special interest because it associates with a marine sponge, Terpios hoshinota, which causes the death of corals. The GI1 genome will provide insights into the interaction between GI1 and the marine sponge.
