Consideration must be given to the rate at which each step in the planned sequence occurs. In many instances, a desired reaction is possible in principle but in practice takes place so slowly as to be ineffective. It is then necessary to investigate whether the rate can be increased to a practicable level by altering the conditions of the reaction, for example, by raising the temperature or by adding an extra species, called a catalyst, that increases the rate without altering the course of the reaction.
