Effect of smartphone addiction on balance in Adults

Balance, in the context of human physiology, refers to the ability to maintain postural stability and equilibrium while performing various tasks or activities. Smartphone technology is a creative development and chronic use of smartphones can significantly impact balance through various mechanisms. Smartphone dependency has surged notably among college students. The primary aim of the research was to investigate how smartphone addiction influences balance in young adults. Understanding the significance of the effect of smartphone addiction on balance may contribute to potentially compromising one's ability to maintain postural stability and respond effectively to balance challenges. Total of 75 young male and female adults are involved in this study. The negative correlation was found between smartphone addiction and dynamic balance, indicated by the right composite score (Spearman’s ρ = -0.843, p = 0.001) and left composite score (Spearman’s ρ = -0.788, p = 0.001) and negative associations between smartphone addiction and static balance, both under conditions of eyes open (ρ = -0.351, p = 0.002) and eyes closed (ρ = -0.254, p = 0.28). Excessive smartphone uses compromises both static and dynamic balance, emphasizing the urgent need to address smartphone addiction for improved overall well-being and reduced risk of falls.
人体生理学语境下的平衡(balance)指个体在开展各类任务或活动时,维持姿势稳定性与身体平衡状态的能力。智能手机技术是一项创新性发展成果,而长期使用智能手机可通过多种机制对平衡能力产生显著影响。当前大学生群体的智能手机依赖程度已显著攀升。本研究的核心目的为探究智能手机成瘾(smartphone addiction)对青年人群平衡能力的影响。明晰智能手机成瘾对平衡能力的影响效应,有助于预判个体维持姿势稳定性、有效应对平衡挑战的能力可能出现的受损情况。本研究共纳入75名青年男女受试者。研究发现,智能手机成瘾与动态平衡(dynamic balance)能力呈显著负相关:右侧综合得分(斯皮尔曼相关系数Spearman’s ρ = -0.843,p = 0.001)与左侧综合得分(Spearman’s ρ = -0.788,p = 0.001)均印证了这一关联;同时智能手机成瘾与静态平衡(static balance)能力亦呈负相关,该关联在睁眼(ρ = -0.351,p = 0.002)与闭眼(ρ = -0.254,p = 0.28)两种测试状态下均成立。过度使用智能手机会同时损害静态与动态平衡能力,这凸显出亟需对智能手机成瘾问题进行干预,以提升个体整体健康水平并降低跌倒风险。
