IGBB/MSU has initiated a project to explore sweet basil transcriptome changes associated with plant response to single or combinations of abiotic stress factors using RNAseq. We have analyzed plants subjected to 10 treatment conditions (three replicates per treatment), with a special focus on the effects of temperature (heat/cold) and drought stress under ambient or elevated CO2 and UV radiation. Experiments were conducted during the growing season in sunlit soil-plant-atmosphere-research (SPAR) chambers located at the Rodney Foil Plant Science Research facility of Mississippi State University (www.spar.msstate.edu). Leaf samples were collected towards the end of the vegetative stage of the plants. We aim to identify differentially expressed genes and to map the corresponding signaling, regulatory, and metabolomic changes associated with all treatment conditions. The comparative analyses will provide a comprehensive view of sweet basil transcriptional reprogramming under abiotic stress.
