Genomic characterization of Shigella species from the Jukskei River in Johannesburg South Africa

Diarrheal diseases are notifiable in South Africa; however, surveillance is limited to clinical samples. The role of the environment, in particular river water, cannot be neglected as rivers may contribute to the transmission of enteric pathogens. The study aimed to characterize Shigella isolates collected from one of the largest urban rivers in Johannesburg, South Africa.
