British Social Attitudes Survey Series
The British Social Attitudes (BSA) survey series was conceived and first carried out by SCPR (now the National Centre for Social Research) in 1983. Since then its annual surveys and books have continually monitored and interpreted the British publics changing attitudes towards social, economic, political and moral issues. The BSA series has become the most comprehensive and authoritative source of data about the ebb and flow of Britain’s changing values. Its findings are reported and interpreted in the series of annual books, as well as in the mass media and are often at the centre of debates about public policy. The datasets are themselves are also used extensively by social scientists as a rich source of material for analysis and teaching.
The BSA surveys are currently based on representative samples of around 3,500 adults (aged 18+) each year, selected by probability methods from private addresses listed in the Postcode Address File (PAF). Data are collected via Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI), and on a follow-up self-completion questionnaire.
BSA’s main publication is its annual edited book, containing a number of essays summarising and interpreting a selection of each years results. The datasets are also deposited at the Data Archive at the University of Essex. Full technical details are published by the National Centre in annual BSA Technical Reports.
Core-funding for the series comes from the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. Most of the funding, however, comes from government Departments, quasi-government organisations (notably the Economic and Social Research Council) and other grant-giving foundations and trusts.
