NRS-13028 | County of Cumberland parish maps

These manuscript maps appear to have been in general use for charting within the Registrar General's Department. There seem to be at least two separate series. The first, which is almost complete, contains maps compiled in 1835, some of which are signed and dated by T.L. Mitchell. The others are not signed, but are very similar in style, and are almost certainly contemporaneous with the signed maps. This series probably contains the original maps of the parishes of the County of Cumberland, which were proclaimed in May 1835. A set of these maps were required to be deposited with the Registrar of the Supreme Court (and subsequently the Registrar General by virtue of responsibilities) at the time the parishes of the County of Cumberland were proclaimed (see Supplement to the New South Wales Government Gazette, 27 May 1835, p.344). It is almost certain that the abovementioned series would include some of the original maps so deposited. The second discernible group, which only contains about 25 maps, chiefly comprises what appears to be tracings from maps drawn by Brownrigg (surveyor), and published between 1846 and 1850. NRS 12466 contains a number of these maps in printed form.The remaining maps do not clearly fall into series, but some appear to have been annotated and used as office maps which are not of County of Cumberland parishes.
