The Standard Model contains three generations of fermions—the electron, muon, and tau; the up, charm, and top quarks—with identical gauge quantum numbers and exponentially hierarchical masses. The number of generations is an unexplained input. Why three rather than one, two, or four has no derivation within the Standard Model or its conventional extensions.
This paper derives the number of generations from the dimensionality of space. In the canvas model, spacetime emerges from wave intersections on a pre-geometric canvas. The internal space on which fermion wavefunctions are defined is the same 3D space spanned by the spatial axes. The Yukawa coupling to the Higgs field is the overlap integral between the fermion's harmonic mode and a Gaussian-localized Higgs profile.
We prove that on a 3D compact internal space of Planck size, exactly three harmonic modes have non-negligible overlap with the Higgs field. The fundamental mode gives the third generation. Modes with one nodal surface give the second generation. Modes with two nodal surfaces give the first generation. Higher modes are exponentially suppressed by e^{-64} ~ 10^{-28}, making any fourth generation unobservable at any feasible energy.
The exponential mass hierarchy m_n ~ m_0 e^{-γn} follows from the Gaussian overlap integral. The number of generations is not a free parameter—it is a theorem that follows from the dimensionality of space. Three generations because space is three-dimensional.
This result originates from the canvas model, a unified framework in which all fundamental physics emerges from wave dynamics on a pre-geometric canvas. The same discrete spacetime structure that gives three spatial dimensions also gives three fermion generations.
