Reproductive strategies of Antarctic penguins. 1993-94

This dataset contains information on:

-To establish the factors determining the reproductive success in a
Chinstrap penguin Pygoscelis antarctica colony.
-To study the reproductive behaviour patterns of this species and
its adaptive value.
-To evaluate the implications of colonial breeding for this
species.

Activities:

During the campaign, five studies were carried out in the penguin
colony of Vapor Col on Deception Island. The first studied the
relevance of the size and quality of the nest for reproductive success
and the nest maintenance behaviour of adults during the incubation
period. The second, studied the growth of chicks and the physical
condition of parents in some broods which had been experimentally
reduced to one chicks (its sibling was moved to another nest) and in
families with two chicks. Another study related the asymmetries of
growth between siblings with the physical condition of adults measured
by biochemical blood parameters. The fourth study was focused on the
factors determining the time when chicks of certain size are left on
their own in the colony by their parents, and the reasons why certain
chicks are left at an earlier age than others.And lastly, the process
of formation and the function of the creches; were studied and a new
hypothesis was proposed about it's function.

-Determinar los factores determinantes del Exito reproductivo en
una poblacion del pingB8ino barbijo (Pygoscelis Antarctica).
-Estudiar los patrones de conducta reproductiva de esta especie y
su valor adaptativo.
-Evaluar las implicaciones que tiene la reproduccion en grandes
colonias para estas aves.

Actividades realizadas:

Durante la campana se realizaron cinco estudios parciales en la
pingainera de Vapour Col en la isla Decepcion. En el primero se
estudio la importancia del tamano y calidad del nido para el Exito
reproductivo y la conducta de mantenimiento del nido por los adultos
durante la incubacion. En el segundo se estudio el crecimiento de
pollos y la condicion fisica de los adultos en familias
experimentalmente reducidas a un pollo (el otro hermano fue llevado a
otro nido) y en familias con dos pollos.Tambien se estudio la
correlacion de la simetria de crecimiento entre hermanos con la
condicion fisica de los adultos medida por parametros bioquimicos de
la sangre. El cuarto estudio se centro sobre los factores
determinantes del momento en que los pollos de cierto tamano son
dejados solos por sus padres en la colonia, y por quCciertos pollos
son dejados a edades mas tempranas que otros.Por altimo se estudiaron
los procesos de formacion y la funcion de las creches o guarderCas de
pollos, y se planteo una nueva hipotesis sobre dicha funcion.
