VPRS 11523 Contract Files

Section 455, Part XVI of the Local Government Act 1915 allowed municipal councils to enter into contracts for the purposes of executing works directed or authorised by the Act. The same piece of legislation stipulated the need for such contracts to be in writing. This series comprises files called Contract Files. They were created to document contract particulars.The Contract Files include original plans. Only those files for the more significant contracts entered into by Council have been identified and selected for permanent retention.(The Contract Files have been sentenced for permanent retention in accordance with the expired PROS 84/25 Local Government Records General Disposal Schedule (Class 5.3.1). Some records in this series pre-date the disposal schedule.It is unclear when this series commenced. The first file sighted is Contract Number 1421 and dated 1965. The first registered contract according to the Contract Registers in custody occurred in 1894.
