Photograph of an advertisement for Port Ballona on Santa Monica Bay as issued by Moye Wickes, ca.1887. The advertisement reads "Hugh S. McCrabb Chief engir Port Ballona Is located on Santa Monica Bay, Latitiude34 deg., Longitude 188 deg. And 30 min., seventeen miles from the City of Los Angeles, and is an Ocean Terminus of the Great Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, the shortest Railroad Line between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, and also the Great Lakes. Port Ballona is the future harbor for Southern California on account of its location and facilities, and will command a large proportion of the commerce of China, Japan and the Islands of the Pacific Ocean destined for Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and the great cities of the North. This property Will without doubt rapidly increase in value beyond all present calculation, as it is not only the seaport for all the above mentioned territory, but it is also one of the prettiest marine views on the Pacific coast. Here the pleasure seeker will have in winter as well as summer and all the year round, surf bathing, yachting, boating, fishing and shooting.
