Screen Industry Survey Data Collection 2017/18

Population selection The population for the Screen Industry Survey 2017/18 was 4,168 enterprises. In 2016/17 it was 3,681 enterprises. See 'Target population' selection under 'Screen Series Data Collection'. Response rates The overall target response rate for the Screen Industry Survey 2017/18 was 75 percent. The achieved response rate was 74 percent. A weight adjustment was applied to account for non-responding units. We identified businesses as key units if their response to a survey question was considerable in the previous year, or if their GST figures suggested they would significantly affect the results in the current year. The target response rate was 100 percent for businesses identified as key units. We achieved a 99 percent response rate for the key units. Reference period The reference period for the survey was the 2017/18 financial year. Businesses with balance dates falling between 1 January and 30 September supplied financial data for the year ending 2018. Businesses with balance dates falling between 1 October and 31 December supplied financial data for the year ending 2017. Given the transitory nature of businesses in the industry, we excluded any business that stopped operating before 1 April 2017 or that started up after 31 March 2018. Questionnaire changes The Screen Industry Survey has been run since 2005. While key questions are retained, some questions have been added and changed, as a result of the information data users require. The key change to the 2018 questionnaire was Question 15, which requests the number of completed screen productions by format and platform of first release. In past surveys, we had only asked about production formats. Due to the fast changing nature of the screen industry, such as the growing use of online platforms, we wanted to capture part of that change by asking data suppliers how their productions were released to reach their audience. However, due to concerns of the quality of the information the table pertaining to production format screen works has been removed. Due to using a reduced sample size in 2018, fewer tables are produced for the release. The tables (3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 11) were removed as they were based of counts for screen works and businesses, and were failing confidentiality when being produced.
