<P>Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.</P><br>1. To provide a descriptive account of the social and demographic characteristics of adult Roman Catholics in England and Wales;<br>
2. To describe the religious attitudes, beliefs and practices of Roman Catholics, including their attitudes to recent changes in the Church;<br>
3. To describe the associational involvement of Roman Catholics, their friendship and marriage patterns;<br>
4. To test hypotheses relating to the &lt;i&gt;effectiveness&lt;/i&gt; of Catholic schools in terms of the religious attitudes, beliefs, behaviour and commitment of their former pupils, and in a way which enabled comparisons to be made with the two studies by Greeley in the United States.<br>
In the analysis of the data, attempts were made to explain changes in the nature of Roman Catholicism in England and Wales in the light of both external social change and recent reforms in the Roman Catholic Church.
