The indicator is a measure of land use and technical overprinting of the landscape by photovoltaic over-area systems (PV-FFA). The solar cells contained therein are surface elements made of semiconductors that convert energy from the solar rays into electrical energy. Solar cells on roofs and on facades of buildings are not taken into account here. Photovoltaic open space installations occupy relatively large areas in the settlement or open space, which are thus withdrawn from any other use. They are often located along highways or railway lines, on fallow or conversion areas (waste heaps, former open-cast mining areas, troop training sites and ammunition depots).
