Hawaiian Pyraloidea IV
The lepidopteran superfamily Pyraloidea is comprised of more than 16,000 species in two families, Crambidae and Pyralidae, making it the third largest group of moths and butterflies. The group is taxonomically uncertain, with the phylogenetic placement of many genera, and even some families, still up for debate. The group has an amazing diversity of life histories, and while many are leaf or plant feeders, others prey on scale insects or live among ant and bee colonies. Some are aquatic, others are adapted to extremely dry environments and others still feed on detritus of various sorts. A number of species are economically important. The greatest diversity of these moths is in the tropics, but they are distributed around the world. Two of the defining features of the group are the basally scaled proboscus which the moths sport in addition to their abdominal tympanal organs. The former has earned them the nickname “snout” moths. Please help the UHIM transcribe its collection of diverse and economically important Pyraloidea moths. The total number of tasks for this dataset is: 505, number transcribed is 505 and number validated is 0.
