L-arabinose attenuates loperamide-induced constipation through regulation of gut microbiota in mice

Chronic constipation is a gastrointestinal disorder affecting millions of people in all ages worldwide with huge financial burden each year. However, more than 50% of patients cannot be cured. Thus, developing effective strategies for the management of constipation is essential. Although restoring intestinal microbiota homeostasis seems a promising strategy against constipation and several studies proved that regulation of intestinal microbiota could relief constipation, whether prebiotics could relieve long-term constipation need to further elucidate. Here, we systematically investigated the therapeutic effect of L-arabinose, a kind of prebiotics, on long-term constipation mice induced by loperamide. The effect on microbiota of L-arabinose were using metagenomic shotgun sequencing of fecal samples.
