Microbial DNA detected in bile aspirates collected during pancreatic head resection

Surgical site infections are a significant risk factor of pancreatic head resection surgery. Prophylactic antimicrobial therapy is used to reduce the risk of surgical site infection. Standard practice is to use intraoperative bile cultures to guide antimicrobial therapy. Standard culture, however, can take 5-6 days to yield actionable results. In this study we investigated the use of metagenomic nanopore sequencing to rapidly identify microbial species and predict antimicrobial resistance present in intraoperative bile samples.
