This bowl, from the Pruitt Ranch site, is an example of Mimbres Black-on-white Style III. Pruitt Ranch (sometimes known as the Pruitt site, Pruitt Upton Ranch site, Gorman Ranch site, and Upton-Tigner site) is a large Mimbres village that straddles the Grant-Luna county line in southwestern New Mexico. The site has been dated to between A.D. 550 and 1130 and has both Late Pithouse and Classic period components. The Simons family recently donated the Pruitt Ranch site to the Archaeological Conservancy. Local residents, including Dr. Berry Bowen and family, V. F. Tannich, and Richard Eisele dug extensively at the site in the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the pottery taken by Tannich is housed at the University of Arkansas Museum and the Saint Louis Art Museum. Many other bowls from Pruitt reside in other museums and private collections. Relatively little professional excavation has taken place at the site. Darrell Creel (University of Texas, Austin) has undertaken mapping efforts.
